<词语辨析>

1. valued;valuable,invaluable,priceless;valueless,worthless (adj. )

valued是形容词,意思是“贵重的;受到很高评价的;被尊重的”,同时也是动词value的过去分词。

valuable有两个意思,一个是“贵重的,值钱的(worth a lot money)”;另一个意思是“很有用的,很有价值的,很重要的(very useful or worth-while or important)”。invaluable意思是“极有价值的,极宝贵的(extremely valuable)”。priceless意思是“无价的,极珍贵的(so valuable that it is difficult to give a financial value)”。由此可以知道,valuable,invaluable,priceless 三个词意义相近,程度上有所不同。

valueless与worthless是近义词,二者都指“无价值的,无用的(having no value, importance or use)”。另外,worthless还可以指“(人)一无是处的,不中用的”。

2. deserve doing;deserve to do

动词deserve指“应受,应得;值得”,其后可以跟v-ing或动词不定式作宾语,但表达的意义不同。v-ing作deserve的宾语时,v-ing具有被动含义,也就是说,句子主语是该动作的承受者。例如:

they deserved punishing. (=to be punished) 他们应当受惩罚。

the old woman deserves looking after. 这位老大娘应当受到照顾。

当动词不定式作deserve的宾语时,不定式具有主动意义,也就是说,句子的主语就是动作的施动者。例如:

she deserved to win because she was the best. 她应当赢,因为她是最优秀的。

students brave enough to at-tempt the course deserve to succeed. 凡有足够勇气选这门课程的学生一定能获得成功。

【拓展】英语中其他三个动词need、require、want也要求其后的动名词采用主动形式来表示被动意义,这一点和deserve的情况相似。要想表达被动意义,也可以在其后跟动词不定式的被动式。
